Drive Through Volcano at Sulphur Springs St. Lucia

St. Lucia is famed for its lush rainforest, volcanic landscape, and natural beauty—and nowhere is that more evident than in Soufrière. One of the island’s most unique attractions is the Sulphur Springs, the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano. A visit here makes for an unforgettable day trip that blends adventure, wellness, and local culture. Here's how to plan the perfect outing from our villas.

Start Your Day: Head to Soufrière

From Banbou Terrace in Vieux-Fort, it’s about a 40 minute scenic drive along St. Lucia’s coast to Soufrière. You can rent a car or hire a local taxi or guide (which we recommend for stress-free navigation and cultural insights). We have many recommendations for trusted drivers who can customize your itinerary and share local tips along the way.

First Stop: Sulphur Springs

Prepare to be amazed! The Sulphur Springs area offers guided tours of the steaming caldera where hot gases escape through the earth’s surface—a rare geologic experience. Afterward, relax in the mineral mud baths, known for their therapeutic properties.

What to Know Before You Go:

  • Bring a dark-colored or old bathing suit, as the minerals can stain or bleach fabric. We provide special towels for use at the springs.
  • Don’t wear jewelry in the mud bath; the sulfur can damage metals.

Next Stop: Piton Falls or Toraille Waterfall

After your soak, take a short drive to a nearby waterfall. Piton Falls offers warm mineral-rich waters cascading into a tranquil pool—a perfect place to rinse off and relax. Alternatively, Toraille Waterfall is a scenic spot that’s easily accessible and great for photos.

Lunch in Soufrière

Recharge with a delicious local meal in the charming town of Soufrière. There are many small restaurants and beachside cafes offering Creole cuisine. Try grilled fish, green fig and saltfish (St. Lucia’s national dish), or local fresh juices.

Some popular options include:

  • Fedo's
  • The Beacon
  • Hummingbird Beach Restaurant

Optional Afternoon Add-Ons:

  • Visit the Diamond Botanical Gardens & Waterfall
  • Stop for photos at the Tet Paul Nature Trail for some of the best views of the Pitons
  • Book a catamaran cruise for a return trip or sunset sail
